Hire Attitude

Two of the most common questions I receive from business owners, managers and executives is: “How do I find good people?” and, “What should I look for when hiring?”

My answer to these questions continues to be the same today as it has been for years: First and foremost, hire ATTITUDE!

Let’s face it; I’m reasonably sure you can teach almost anyone everything they’re going to need to know about your business, company, industry and marketplace. However, the hardest thing to teach is attitude. And if an applicant doesn’t have it when they’re trying to impress you into hiring them, what do you think is going to happen once they’re on the payroll?

One of the many things that makes Starbucks so successful is the great service their counter people deliver. When hiring, Starbucks will not hire anyone who doesn’t smile during the interview. Of course, if they’re not going to smile when they’re supposed to be putting their best foot forward, what happens when they’re face to face with a customer?

Another great reason to hire attitude is; people with great attitudes are more willing to listen and learn. Even if their skills are not great, they will do everything in their power to acquire the skills that will enable them to get ahead. They are the kind of people who will track you down to the ends of the earth until you teach them everything they need to know in order to be successful.

Conversely, hiring someone with a poor attitude but great skills is counter-productive. People with poor attitudes not only fail to use their skills, but never go out of their way to improve upon them. And you know, if you don’t use your skills, you lose your skills.

Lastly, people with great attitudes tend to be self-motivated, self-starters. They’re the kind of employees you don’t have to worry about should you have to go out of town or want to take a vacation. They’re the kind of people who function and perform just as well when you are there as when you aren’t. How’s that for piece of mind?

Thanks for the comment reyes. I agree that it's important to be able to solve clients' problems. In fact, as a salesperson it's one of your more important jobs. But, on the other hand, you're not going to get that client to begin with without a great attitude. And, I'll bet when that client calls your company they want everyone they talk to to have a great attitude.
