Were you a "fly on our wall" last night?!? My wife and I had this exact conversation, nearly word-for-word (except our childhood was in the 70s/80s)!! We grew up very similar – in the South – and are working hard to get 'back to the basics'. We live in one of the wealthiest communities in America, and are doing what we can to "burst our bubble" (and our friends, for that matter).

When you step back and take a look…you have to ask yourself what life is really all about, and what is joy and happiness worth!!

    Great post!

    Warren,
Wow! You are dead on. I think as a society, we've become so spoiled, and are living in such an atmosphere of entitlement and irresponsibility, that people believe they can make idiotic fiscal choices, and blame someone else when things go south. I've had both my sales reps & sales managers ask why I don't drive a nicer car. I tell them how my car looks fine, it's dependable, and the best thing is, no payment. I pay cash. You could by a small house for what some of my folks pay for cars. And they're some of my lowest paid reps! And they are the ones who gripe about the economy, how it's all the governments fault why nobody's buying. Give me a break. Maybe my Grandfather was right. If you can't buy it outright, you can't afford it. And I would add, if you really want it, and can't afford it, GO MAKE SOME MORE SALES CALLS!!

Since when did having a cell phone, cable and an ipod become a "necessity"? Times can't be that tough if you can still afford these items! When you cut out all these $$ burners, don't take vacations and work sixty hours a week and still can't afford to put food on the table -then you have every right to complain times are tough – until then people need to stop whining!

Thank you so much for the inspiration.

  5. Thank you all for your comments. It's good to see there are people out there who get it. It's too bad we have a government that doesn't. While most of us work hard, pay our bills and have remained responsible, it seems our government has decided to subsidize failure by sending money to:
People who bought houses they can't afford (wonder how many of these houses have flat screen tv's); grossly mismanaged auto companies who continue to make cars nobody wants (does anyone with a brain really think giving these incompetents billions in taxpayer dollars is going to encourage people to buy their cars?); and states who during boom times didn't save a penny for a rainy day.
What kind of message are they sending to people who are trying to be responsible?
