You podcast brings back one of my favorite memories.

My niece is mentally challenged and was struggling horribly in school. She was too advanced for special eduacation, but her learning abilities made it difficult for her to keep up with the regular students. To add complication, the children that she went to school with were relentless with the derogitory comments about her handicap and dimoralized her into believing that she was incapable of accomplishing anything.

I spent 2 hours with her taking her down a different road by introducing her to looking at life thorough her own eyes, abilities, and desires. I also did something that no one thought that she was capable of…I taught her how to dream, and set goals. Most people are unaware of the fact that no one, no matter how much they may be "slower" than what they may consider to be "normal", handicapped people have bigger hearts and are capable of accomplishing more everyday. Why? Because that is what their whole life is a challenge, every bloody day.

She not only went on to become an honor student, she is currently enrolled in college and kicking major booty!

I didn't do it…. she did…. all I did was point at life from a different perspective and help her to do that through her own eyes and belief systems, she did the rest.

One of the proudest moments of my life, was the day that I witnessed this mental powerhouse, graduate from high school.

Warren, you taught me how to help her. You impact lives without even being there.

    You da man!

  2. Wow! What a great story John. Someday the people who made fun of her will be coming to your niece for a job. She deserves a lot of credit, and so do you. Now that's the power of belief and inspiration!

  3. MaryEllen Shown says:

I'm starting my new job today — still with the same company, but a different job and city. I can't wait to get started with the goal-setting. Right now I have a blank slate!
