Move Your Ass Monday! #29 – Lessons I’ve Learned Along the Way

Hi this is Warren Greshes and welcome to, “Move Your Ass Monday!”  I’m here to eliminate all the excuses, get your week started on a high note and make sure you reach your fullest potential.

Awhile backing I was speaking with a young woman who had been in my audience.  She said that when I told the audience to “Do what you love,” it sent a cold shiver down her spine, made her look closely at what she was doing and convinced her to enroll back in school in order to pursue her lifelong dream.

That got me thinking about all the other great lessons I’ve learned in life that always seem to work and have guided me in almost everything I do.

Number 1 of course;

  • Love What You Do and Do What you Love –My old boss once said to me, “Nobody likes their job, but you have to earn a living and support your family.”  Talk about sending cold shivers down your spine.  Thankfully, I never believed that for a second.  I figured someone had to love what they do and I was right.  In fact, I found out that people who love what they do never spend a day working.  Because of that they spend more time doing it which makes them so good at it, that they can’t help but become successful.
  • Number 2; Save Your Money – People who save their money can never be trapped in a life style they don’t want to be in.  I was lucky to learn this lesson at a young age.  It has allowed me to quit jobs I hated; start my own business; enable my wife to choose to stay home with the kids; relocate to a town of our choosing and never have to dance to anyone else’s tune.  It’s not easy: of course, if it was, everyone would do it. It takes sacrifice.  However, I also learned that a little bit of short term pain up front, can yield a tremendous amount of long term gain in the back end.

Which brings me to #3;

  • Think Long Term – By thinking long term it helps you to realize what your true priorities are in life.  We live in an “Instant gratification society.”  Too many people are too willing to settle for things they don’t want, because they’re not willing to do what it takes to get the things or live the life they do want.  Set long term goals and formulate plans to achieve them.  It’ll help to keep you focused on what is important and stop you from being side-tracked to what is expedient.
  • Write Everything Down – The first sales meeting I ever went to (it was 1973), my boss yelled at me for not having a pen or pad: that was the last time it has ever happened.  I go nowhere without something to write with or on.  I don’t care who you are, nobody’s memory is that great.  And what about all the great ideas you’ve gotten over the years and forgotten over the years because you never wrote them down?  Remember those long term goals I just mentioned; if you’re not willing to take 5 minutes to write them down, makes you think you’d be willing to put in 5 years of time, energy, effort, or hard work toward achieving them?

Move Your Ass Monday #28 Everything Needs to be Planned

Hi this is Warren Greshes and welcome to, “Move Your Ass Monday!”  I’m here to eliminate all the excuses, get your week started on a high note and make sure you reach your fullest potential.

If you’ve ever had, or wanted to have a house custom built, would you consider doing it without a complete set of architectural plans?  After all, if you have an experienced builder, couldn’t you just tell him what you want?  Besides, it would save a lot of time not having to wait for plans to be drawn up.  Don’t you think, after years of experience, your builder could build a house from memory?

I’ll bet it could be done, but do you think it would come out exactly the way you want it?  Plus, don’t you think the time you would have saved not drawing up a plan, would be squandered by all the time you’ll waste having to redo the mistakes; not to mention the money wasted?

Yet, isn’t that how far too many people live their lives?  We are in such a hurry to have everything now, that we consider stopping to formulate a plan something that will only slow us down.  When, in reality, the little bit of time we invest up front to create a written, focused direction and plan, ends up saving us far more time in the back end by not leading us in directions we don’t want to go: which happens when we “wing it.”

Another benefit of planning is: it helps us understand that the things we want most in life take time.  I wonder; how many people give up on their dreams because they didn’t plan; have an unrealistic idea of how long it should take to achieve; and, when it doesn’t materialize immediately, give up, convinced it can’t be done?

Formulating a plan also helps us decide what our true priorities are.  It enables us to clearly define what sacrifices need to be made in order for us to achieve what we want.  It also allows us to decide whether or not we’re willing to make those sacrifices, which, in turn, helps us decide whether what we say we want out of life is truly what we want.  Imagine how much time and frustration you can save by not chasing a dream you didn’t really want in the first place.

Whether it’s a career change; starting your own business; quitting your job to stay home with the kids; saving for retirement; picking up and moving to a new location; or, picking the right college or university; the ability to sit down, take a step back and invest some time in creating a written, focused direction and plan with pros, cons, priorities and sacrifices, can only increase your odds of success.

Move Your Ass Monday #27 Why Go Into Business for Yourself – And Why Not

Hi this is Warren Greshes and welcome to, “Move Your Ass Monday!”  I’m here to eliminate all the excuses, get your week started on a high note and make sure you reach your fullest potential.

A group of Women Entrepreneurs were asked their reasons for quitting their jobs and starting their own businesses.  The most common answers were:

  1. The freedom to spend more time with my children, if I choose.
  2. The opportunity to reach my full potential
  3. Because I’m tired of banging my head against the glass ceiling.
  4. Being my own boss

Money came in far down the list, which is interesting, since so many people make the mistake of using “Financial Rewards,” as their overriding reason to go off on their own.

True, if we looked at a composite of the average millionaire, it would be someone who owned their own business.  But for many, if not most, of these people, money was simply a by-product of all the right reasons they went off on their own.

While money is a poor reason to go into business, it’s an even worse reason for choosing what business to go into.  I’ve had people tell me they’d decided to get into a certain business because they heard “you can make a lot of money doing that.”  The truth is: you can make a lot of money doing anything, if you’re good at it, enjoy it and work your tail off.

There are far better reasons to choose a particular business; such as:

  1. You have a talent for something (like cooking, technology, working on cars, home repairs, etc.), really love doing it and just happen to be good enough that customers will buy your services.  One caution:  Being a great cook doesn’t mean you’ll be a successful restaurant owner.  There’s more to running a restaurant than just cooking.  If you’re not willing to learn and master the business aspects of it, don’t do it.  Instead, think about getting into catering, or being a personal chef.
  2. You feel you have something to offer that people need. Many great discoveries have come about because the inventor was attempting to make his or her own life easier or better.  In the movie “Baby Boom,” Diane Keaton is so unhappy with the baby food in the stores, she starts making food at home for her daughter.  Her daughter loves it so much; she realizes she might be on to something.  She creates packaging, starts her own gourmet baby food company, and builds into a successful operation.
  3. It’s the kind of business that offers you the freedom and flexibility you always wanted. Many people start home-based businesses because they want to be able to spend more time with their families or be home when the kids come home from school.  Others might want a totally opposite life-style and choose a business that allows them to travel all over the world.

The biggest reason to avoid using money as your main motivation for either starting or choosing a business is: money is the last thing to come.

The first few years in business will be very hard.  There won’t be a lot of money.  Unless you’re in it for the right reasons, what is going to keep you happy and keep you going during those tough times?
